My sister and I were A & W Car Hops in San Rafael for a long time. Off and on for me, from age 15 to 18. It did attract some perverts. Like on a slow night and it's only a couple of us girls there. There was this one guy who started bringing us things that were more than a tip, a joint, or a beer. We didn't really know how creepy that was until we got a bit older, but you know he was up to something other than wanting a rootbeer and a burger. He would park his van in the back corner and sit for there forever. Other than that, customers were more rude and demanding than polite. They expected that because they are car hop, that we are the waitress. It's not like that. They would leave terrible messes, steal the mugs, trays too. We did get tips, which at that time, could be $30. or more a shift. It was cool hopping from car to car when the new owner changed the uniforms to poodle skirts. I loved my little polka dotted socks! Good memories.

I remember being in the backseat of my sister's car with her friends, at one of those drive ins. When she drove away, I was still drinking my milkshake. I was so worried that I would be in BIG trouble for taking the glass. I didn't mean to do it.

Do remember the driveIn restaurants where the girls used to wait on people in their cars...

Circle DriveIn in Corte Madera

King Cotton in San Rafael

Burgie's DriveIn in Ignasio..Novato

Can you think of any others where they came out to your car
with a tray and asked you to roll up your side window a little, then
put the tray hanging on to the window?
In San Francisco, at Mel's DriveIn, the girls came out with roller skates up to your car to take your order.
