There was one other constituent to the distinctive Woolworth's aroma, and it emanated from the parakeet cages.
Woolworths, W.T. Grant and sometimes Wards were good sources for 88-cent records in my poverty-stricken teenage years.
I remember the food at Woolworth's, but not at W.T. Grant's which people in other parts of the country say had a great lunch counter. Did the Corte Madera Grant's not have one ?
I do remember Herbert's Sherbert's at CMC though. Was that a chain ?
I can still smell it! snifff......ummmmmmmmm! I worked at JC Penney's and used to go their for the nacho's. I was addicted to those disgusting, neon orange spicy nachos.
That was a great lose to Corte Madera and to the country as there is no "Five and Dime" to replace Woolworth. There was a very big Woolworth's in San Francisco that also closed that had everything. They had a big fire several years ago, and they recovered from that and went on with a sucessful business for years.
I worked at Corte Madera Chevron and would get one of those delicious dogs almost every day. The lady behind the counters name was Jean. In my immature brain I always thought the greeting, "Hi Jean!" was hysterical. I'm sure it was......for the 200 millionth time I did it. She always chuckled though. Aw, customer service.
