oh i loved miscellaneous, too - i cannot remember the owner's name, but she was great

cafe nuvo was great

and mauritzio rossetti opened up that wonderful takeout place in the 80s, mmmmmm

i noticed the other day that paperships is no longer a crystal/ephemera/spirit type store - that made me sad - paperships was one of the last hippie holdouts

My mom's gift store, Various & Sundries, has been a fixture on San Anselmo Avenue for over 30 years (since the mid 70s). It features all handmade gifts and gourmet foods of all types. It is right next to where the B of A is now--the building is now called The Courtyard but used to be The Old West Arcade (and it was such a funky '70s building back then!). Her store started out in a tiny space upstairs above Ricardo's Ristorante (another San Anselmo Ave. classic), and eventually moved downstairs and now fills about half the building. It has survived both the flood of '82 and the flood of '06 and is still going strong.

I remember Miscellaneous with great fondness from my '70s childhood as well. They had awesome stickers and candy and stuffed animals and little collectible tchotchkes that I spent far too much allowance on.

Another place that's been around a long time but maybe not quite as long is the Gelato shop--best ice cream on the planet!

Don't forget Keintz's Bakery--best donuts in Marin (OK, LaFayette still make great ones, too); now Royal Sweet and just as good.

Orange Julius at The Hub where they broke a raw egg into the blender to make the drink. No wonder it was so good. It's sad that today you can't take the one in a billion chance you'll make someone sick.

From the 60's the Health Food Store that is now Body Thyme.... yup does anyone remember that? Also got my first bra at Kaufmans (if anyone cares) and let see there was a shoe store across the street from the Mens shop of Kaufmans and that is where I had to get those ugly shoes for my uniform I wore to St. Anselmes.... Saddle shoes... my were brown and white.. My sister since she went to Marin Catholic she had navy and white.. I always liked her's better...

Remember when the post office in San Anslemo use to be Safeway???? And the Post Office was the bldg that is now the extension of Comforts...

I don`t remember the name of the track in Larkspur. But I did race there a few times. Spent most of my time at Kings Raceway in Downtown Mill Valley. Good times.

Anyone remember a hobby shop in the space over the creek that's now Great Acorn? I think it was "Spauldings". They had a couple of
WW1 vintage airplane engines, one was a radial, up on display stands, in their front windows. They also had an HO scale slot car track that you could rent time on. I'd ride my stingray up from Corte Madera with friends and race away on that great track.

Speaking of slot car tracks, how about the 1/24 scale track in Larkspur. In a storefront on Magnolia, smack downtown. Was it called "A+A Speedway" or something like that?

I'm not sure of the location you speak of, the best ice cream store in San Anselmo was Schaefer's Ice Cream, they made the ice cream and the candies in the store. I used to finish my IJ paper route (in those days it was an afternoon paper) go to Schaefer's and get a hot fudge sundae and then go home for dinner.

what was the name of the ice cream place where paradigm cycles is now? they had the BEST boysenberry sherbet on the planet and it was such a treat to be able to go there and get a scoop.
there was also a store there called flash that sold all sorts of great jewelry--i bought a pair of laurel burch earrings there before anyone had ever heard of laurel burch.

My favorite store as a kid was Miscellaneous in downtown San Anselmo. My friends I used to go in after school (Wade Thomas) and buy jawbreakers. We also went to the Baskin Robbins on Sir Francis Drake and watched a lot of movies (Footloose, the Rick Springfield movie and others) at the Tamalpais Theater. I worked at Swensen's in Red Hill while in high school and we always hung out at Papa Vito's to play video games.

As teens, we'd jump in to the pool at the Essex Center on Sir Francis Drake for a swim after walking home from a fun night at Cafe Nuovo. Ahh, the good old days!

I grew up around the corner from model market.... we used to tie a nieghbors dog up to the gumball machines outside the market in hopes he would pull the machines over so we could collect the striped balls and exchange them slowly across the street at center market.......back then striped gumballs were worth a dime .... I actually have the old butcher block from my model market in my shop right now

Yes! I remember Cafe Nuvo. I was just eating lunch at Debbie Does Dessert (The old Nuvo), and remembering going to hear a great jazz combo. That was a place where I smoked many cigarettes and spilled a confession or two. Thanks for the memory.

Model Market used to be where my mother used to buy our meat for dinner. Model Market is just off of center blvd. That is the old railroad bed for the electric train that went from Fairfax to sausalito.

That's right, Hilda's was where Bubba's is now, and she sold that business and went back to England, and later came back and open across the st. She wasn't there very long before she closed. She could remember your order, and didn't have to write anything down, she would go to the cash register and tell you what you had and then what it cost.

Kaufman's was a very upscale clothing and other stuff store, my mother knew Mr. Kaufman very well, and did business for him.
Gunning's was owned by a lady that I remember very well, she had that hobby shop for a long time and sold it to another guy "Steve" that has been there for 15 yrs.

Remember these?

Kaufmann's for Men (Max, the proprietor?) and Kaufmann's for Women across the Street?

Hilda's (when it was across the street where I think Bubba's used to be?)

The Rexall pharmacy near Kaufman's (and Mr. Andrade the pharmacist?)

Caffe Nuvo (one of Marin's earliest cool espresso spots?)

The Yarn Nook and Hildred the owner (and Toy Circus next door?)

Shibui Gardens (still there).

The Arbor Restaurant (near Lococo's) and it's delicious BLT sandwiches?

Barclays Bank, which later became Santa Barbara Savings, then Bayview Savings?

Juarez Restaurant (next to the old Pet Food Cottage petsshop)

The big flood of 1982 when so many of the aforementioned sustained massive damage?

Patrick Brother's framing?

The Great Acorn Company (still there I think)

Gunnings Hobbies.

Anybody remember any others?
