SO SCAREY! I remember being in grammar school at Lagunitas and having air raid drills. When the alarm sounded we had to crawl under our desks. We had to hunker down in the fetal postion with a forearm on the floor to rest our forehead and the other arm behind our neck.

We had to stay there, waiting for "THE ATOMIC BOMB," or the airplanes flying over and dropping bombs on us.

I think, even more frightening for me at the time, was the fact that our parents had to fill out a form stating where we should go if there was a real bombing while we were in school. The choices were to stay at school and wait for someone to come for us, or to go north on the school bus.

My mother sent me on the school bus because my married sister lived in Lagunitas. The reasoning was that the further north you went, the safer you would be.

Being so young, I didn't understand anything other than I had to go the opposite direction from home and may never see my mother again!
