My grandfather bred boxer dogs, back in late 40's. He donated one pup from each litter to Guide Dogs in San Rafael. Was a Navy vet of both WW1 & WW2.

If you type in,historical photo's from the marin ij,theres an ariel photo from the 50's showing the guide dogs and surrounding area.An excellent photo plus some others.

Actually that would make more sense as Guide Dogs was organized to provide assistance for blinded WWII veterans.

But the Guide Dogs site states that they moved to San Rafael in 1947. Also, in their historical photo album, there's this photo showing the groundbreaking for their San Rafael facility, and those are definitely late-40s clothes everyone's wearing, not late 50s.

I believe it is the Guide dogs. Right next to the cemetery.

Guide Dogs would have been constructed in '58 so this predates it by a few years.

If that is the playing field at Hartzell school on the right, then the picture would have to have been taken after 1950 which is when the school was built.

Foreshortening makes it look like one hill; what looks like the higher part of the one the cemetery is on is actually the ridge on the other side of the highway.

I agree with everyone except that the hill seems much higher than it is now.

Did they take some off the top ?

The two houses at the right sure have a postwar or even early-50s look to them; note the 2-car garage. Too bad there aren't any cars reasonably close.

Are we not, in fact, looking at the Guide Dogs for the Blind facility? This strikes me as a photo by a professional photographer, either on a job for Guide Dogs or a news photo. If that's the case the date is 1947 or later.

Actually now that I look closely at this picture, I'm going to guess that the basketball backstop is in the playing field at Oliver Hartzel School (long since turned into condos) where I went to grades 1-5. There was an upper playing area that was paved there and it's just about in the right place. The "new" school was build in the late 40s, but there must have been an earlier structure there that it replaced. This picture would have been taken on top of the hill just above the school where we used to build forts during recess.

I agree....street in foreground would be Los Ranchitos Rd.....train tracks go under the 101 overpass......Santa Margarita Island and Santa Venetia in background.
