A bunch of us took the Greyhound every day, starting in Larkspur to go to St. Raphael's school in San Rafael in the late 1940s. Later we took the bus to Kentfield Corners and transferred to the bus that ran down SFD Blvd. to go to Marin Catholic. On nice days I walked, with a friend to save bus fare. It got us there nearly as quick. (No waiting for the bus at street corners.) We walked along the Larkspur boardwalks and over the old wooden foot bridge across the creek to Bon Air Rd. by Marin General. This was before the auto bridge was put in, and Bon Air Rd. was paved. After that I went to College of Marin for one year, and took the bus there. Taking the bus was "normal" then. I used to envy the kids in the 1930s and before who got to take the train to Tam High.

I remember the Greyhound used to go from the Depot in Mill Valley to Marin Catholic. This was in 1965-66. I used to take it to school.

Anyone remember that Highway 101 once went all the way through downtown San Rafael (there was no Hetherton Way or an elevated freeway) and it also went all through downtown Novato. It took forever to get anywhere when we were kids!

My mom made us walk to the Greyhound Bus Station at 3rd and Tamalpais to catch a bus to the Hub in San Anselmo where we then had to transfer to another bus that dumped us in front of Marin Catholic. Can't imagine high school kids taking a bus these days - kids in Marin these days are far to snobby for that. We did the reverse coming home and then me and my brother would race each other up 3rd and Grand Avenue to our home for cookies and milk!
