My grandmother gave me a transistor radio, with which I listened to KEWB in my backyard in Sleepy Hollow. Thanks to this thread I can date that memory to pre-'65. Later I listened to KFRC, but at some point I found KMPX, then KSAN. Ah, the good old days.

The new cube on the square (Jack London square). KYA was the number 1 am station in the early 60's, then KEWB took over around 1963. I will never forget the day in 1965 when I turned on my radio and KEWB was gone, I thought it must be temporary but it was permanently gondi, I was sad. Then KFRC came up to number 1. Then in 1967 KMPX fm took over with commercial free radio in multiplex stereo with the famous "Big Daddy" Tom Donahue, Dusty Street and Bob Vocco. That was the end of am radio as king, but we still liked KDIA the lucky 13 back to black summer groove, for Motown music. Some of us hippies loved soul music also.

That always aggravated me, pedant that I was. "It's radio, not TV!!! TV has channels, not radio!!!" I'd fume to myself.
