This is a very sad thread. It's amazing to think of hooking going on at the north 101 on-ramp in sausalito. The IJ published a big article on unsolved Marin murders back around 2005. One of the poor victims was one of the prostitutes who worked at this spot. Her body was found off panoramic highway. I believe she was african-american.
There was another victim whose body was found off panoramic highway around the same time. She was last seen at one of the seedy motels on east Francisco blvd. in SR. I think she had was last seen hitchhiking out in front of the motel.
eh........boys....... There are still hookers in the Canal area. Definitely around Belvedere St. and behind Burger King. These girls are usually brought in from out of county. It's pretty sad.
Rich, I think I knew the blonde. She was the girlfriend of my only friend from Marin City, The late Bill Smith. We were classmates at Tam High and his mom worked there and I think his Dad had an Auto Body shop in Richmond. It was the late seventies and cocaine was a problem for a lot of people. That girl would give Bill all her money, but he was no pimp. He was the sweetest man you could ever meet. They both had a problem though. Two lives one wishes we could have gotten through to, but we weren't perfect either. Sad story.
I remember in the late 70's/early 80's when the north end of Sausalito had the 'hitchhookers' that thumbed rides on Bridgeway to ply their trade, I had the landscape contract for several properties at the north end of town. There were 2 ladies I remember well, a redhead & a tall busty blonde, they often tossed their discarded bottles of mixed drinks into our landscape, the blonde was found decapitated in the delta & 1 or 2 others were found dead by the road in west marin, maybe Franks Valley. The redhead survived & was turning tricks out of her apartment by Cinema 1 in Corte Madera after things got too rough on the street, near the end of the era a black hooker showed up & began working the Bridgeway strip, I ran into 'her' in Sausalito Cellars one day & realized 'she' had a 5 o'clock shadow & one heck of an adams apple !
Remember in the 60s & 70s when there were lots of street hookers in Marin? Some of them hung out right before the 101 Northbound entrance at the north end of Sausalito. The Canal area of San Rafael was another popular spot, especially in the area surrounding the Bermuda Palms Motel. Now all we have are the "Oriental Massage" parlors scattered around Central Marin.
